Sault Ste. Marie's New Bus Routes: Sault Loops Launching June 7 (2026)

The City of Sault Ste. Marie is set to unveil a major overhaul of its bus network, dubbed 'Sault Loops', on June 7th, just in time for the upcoming municipal election. This initiative aims to revolutionize local transportation by enhancing stop frequency, reliability, and overall rider experience. The new system introduces four distinct routes: Citywide, Westside, Hillside, and Eastside, each designed to offer a seamless and efficient travel experience.

One of the key features of Sault Loops is the improved transferability between routes, significantly reducing travel times and minimizing the need for frequent downtown connections. This is achieved through more frequent service intervals, with 15-minute daytime intervals between major destinations such as downtown, Algoma University, Cambrian Mall, Walmart, and the Northern Transfer Hub at Sault College. The system also enhances reliability by adjusting schedules and departure time offsets, ensuring a more consistent and dependable service.

Another notable change is the discontinuation of on-demand weekend evening service, which will be replaced with hourly fixed-route service. This shift aims to streamline the transit network and provide a more predictable and structured service. The Central Community Bus, however, will remain unchanged, maintaining its role in serving the community.

The redesign of the bus network is the result of extensive analysis and community input gathered through the Transit Optimization Study. The city's deputy CAO for community development and enterprise services, Brent Lamming, emphasized the benefits of the new system, highlighting its ability to offer more frequent service, reduced service gaps, and a smoother transition between daytime and nighttime weekday service.

The introduction of Sault Loops marks a significant step towards a more efficient and user-friendly public transportation system in Sault Ste. Marie. While the changes may initially cause some disruption, the long-term benefits are expected to be substantial, improving the overall commuting experience for residents and visitors alike. As the city embarks on this transformation, it is crucial to monitor the impact of these changes and gather feedback from the community to ensure the system continues to meet the evolving needs of the city.
